Place of origin |
Bound sheet music for Mazeppa Waltzes arranged by J.P.Clarke, on subjects from the Cantata of Mazeppa by Balfe.
The front sheet is illustrated with a lithograph drawn by R.J. Hamerton. This shows a stark clifftop scene. A rearing horse stands on the edge of the cliff, its back is encircled by a rope harness. Tied to this harness is a woman in a loose white tunic and leather sandals. The back sheet is printed with a list of the new dance music published by Cramer, Wood & Co.
The lithograph on the front sheet is labelled 'Adah Isaacs Menken, in her extraordinary Equestrian Act.' This provacative act, in which Menken (a painter, poetess and acrobat) appeared wearing only tights matched with a belted tunic which finished high on her thighs, helped establish her reputation as a scandalous figure.
