Sheet Music
ca. mid nineteenth century (published)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Bound sheet music for 'Melodies from the celebrated opera' Der Freischutz composed by the German composer Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826). This set of music is for 'The Bridesmaid's Chorus'.

The front sheet of this music is decorated with an etched illustration of an ominous night scene entitled 'The Witches Glen'. The ground of this glen has a ring of skulls, in the centre of which stands a man in jerkin and hose. He is raising a staff, on top of which is another skull. A waterfall bound by a series of bridges is visible in the background as is a crowned figure, his arms outstretched.

Der Freischütz (The Marksman) is an opera in three acts by Carl Maria von Weber to a libretto by Friedrich Kind. Its plot was taken from German folk legend and many of its tunes were inspired by German folk music. The scene illustrated on the front of this music actually appears to be 'Wolf's Glen' where the hero is tricked in to casting the cursed bullets under the enchantment of the villianous Kasper.
