Place of origin

A illustrated print and lyrics for The Advantages of Toping, written and sung, with unbounded Applause, by Charles Dibdin.

The coloured print above the lyrics shows a tavern scene in which a group of men are seated around a wooden table. The table is largely bare apart from a simple pair of lighted candlesticks, pipe and bottle of wine. The men are all in an advanced state of drunkeness. They are dressed in the tight knee breeches and pantaloons matched with tight jackets, neckcloths and hessian boots that were a key part of fashionable male dress in the late eighteenth/early nineteenth century.
