The Buddha Preaching in Indra’s Heaven
and Descending to Earth
1850–1900
Ratanakosin period
Banner paintings decorated the buildings that housed
Buddhist images in Thai monasteries. This one shows
the Buddha sitting in the heaven ruled by the god Indra,
which he visited to preach to his deceased mother. Further
down, he descends to earth by a miraculous stairway and
is greeted by Indra blowing a conch and the god Brahma
holding an umbrella. The European-style buildings at
ground level reflect the influence of western art and new
buildings designed by western architects in Bangkok at
that time.
