Illustrated song sheets for the songs in La Figlia del Reggimento. Published in italian and with english words by Charles Jeffreys, 21 Soho Square.
Stitched together at the spine, the cover sheet of the music has a central lithograph of the actress Jenny Lind, in the role of Maria. She is dressed in a fitted, military style jacket with epaulettes at the shoulders, and a wide white skirt with button detailing down the full length of the side seam. This skirt finishes just above the ankle to reveal a glimpse of stocking and neat boots below. The inner sheets are printed with music and the final sheet has a thematic list of popular songs published Charles Jeffreys.
La Figlia del Reggimento is a comic opera in two acts by the composer Gaetano Donizetti. The title role of Maria , (a young woman adopted by the army as a baby) was a favorite with nineteenth-century singers such as Jenny Lind and Adelina Patti. The opera centres upon her love for a Tyrolean peasant who has saved her life, but is accused by the army of being a spy.
