Autograph manuscript in Russian by Léonide Massine for the stage directions for the ballet Baba Yaga first performed as the final section of Contes Russesby Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. Contes Russes (Children’s Tales) was described as a ‘Ballet (People’s Play) of 3 acts, with a dance prelude, two comic interludes and a dance epilogue’ it was created and choreographed by Léonide Massine for Serge Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes to music by Anatol Liadov (Liadof) and ‘scenery, curtains and costumes' by M Larionov. First performed under the name Contes Russes on (possibly) 28 April 1917 at the Teatro Constancia Rome, Italy. (First performed in Paris by the Ballet Russes on 11 May 1917 at the Theatre du Chatelet). The ballet was revised production first Performed in London under the name Children’s Tales by the Ballet Russes on 23 December 1918 at Coliseum Theatre.
Baba-Yaga was performed as an independent ballet between 23 May 1929 at the Theatre Sarah Bernhardt in Paris and 24 July at the Royal Opera House.
Baba Yaga is based on the Slavic folk tale. The manuscript consists of 4.5 pages in ink and pencil with the title on the upper wrapper. dated 7 December 1916.
