The play was first staged at the Citizens' Theatre, Glasgow, opening on 9 May 1967 and transferred to the Comedy Theatre in London, where it opened on 20 July, not 2 July as given on the artwork. The production was directed by Michael Blakemore and the cast included Joe Melia, Zena Walker, Joan Carson, Phyllida Law and Joan Hickson.
