This bright gouache sketch shows a scene from the 1942 production of Phèdre at the Comédie Francaise. It was once part of the private collection of Frosca (the nickname of Madame Euphrasis Munster who had a close relationship with the artist) but as an accompanying letter from the Jean Hugo makes apparent was given to Cecil Beaton in December of 1964 after Frosca's death (August 1963).
