Memorandum of Agreement between the conductor and composer Alfred Mellon (1820-1867) and the scenic artist Thomas Grieve (1799-1882), in which Grieve undertakes to direct the Scenic Department of the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden, during Mellon's 1866-67 Season, dated 22 September 1866.
Grieve agrees to design, paint and 'to find all Artists and Labourers together with Colours Foil paper Metal and all materials required for ornamenting Scenery for an Operetta and the Pantomime, including the Ballet and Transformation Scenes.' The painting of the scenery is to commence on the first day of October 1866. Grieve also 'agrees to do the ordinary work of the theatre in re-touching or improving old Scenery or in adding small parts to such Scenery already painted.'
The agreement was witnessed by Edward Murray whose signature bears a marked resemblance to the handwriting of the person who drew up the document.
