Taken from a set of illustrations from the designs of Leon Bakst for The Sleeping Princess which were originally published by Ben Brothers in 1923, this illustration is labelled 'Planche XXXVIII: Les Mirlitons'. The image shows a figure dressed in a jester's costume of red breeches and with a fitted, front fastening bodice with short sleeves cut in triangles and trimmed with bells. The tight sleeves of the top beneath are striped in purple, orange and green. He is wearing white gloves and stockings and carrying a mock sceptre in his left hand. He also wears a hat with a high crown which is also decorated in stripes of red, green and gold. Harry Beard Collection.
Only 1000 copies of the original, limited edition, book were published by Benn Brothers.
