Place of origin

Taken from a set of illustrations from the designs of Leon Bakst for The Sleeping Princess which were originally published by Ben Brothers in 1923, this illustration is labelled 'Planche XXXVI: Décor des Fiançailles'. The image shows a circular courtyard open to a blue cloud filled sky. The courtyard is on two levels, with a sweeping flight of steeps on the left and is filled with a succession of columns all of which are ornamented with garlands of leaves. A pair of figures stand at the head of the flight of steps and another figure, possibly a guard stands at the foot of a towering pillar in the foreground. Harry Beard Collection.

Only 1000 copies of the original, limited edition, book were published by Benn Brothers.

Further information about Bakst and his work for the Ballets Russes can be found on the Theatre and Performance Section of the museum's website.

Diaghilev's production of this ballet was staged at the Alhambra Theatre in 1921.
