Taken from a set of illustrations from the designs of Leon Bakst for The Sleeping Princess which were originally published by Ben Brothers in 1923, this illustration is labelled 'Planche XXXIII: Mazurka (Dames)'. It shows a woman in a wide skirted dress which ends just above the ankle. The bodice and top section of the skirt is made from a silver material decorated with a fish scale like pattern. The underskirt is white and decorated with silver motifs and strips of gold braids and garlands of green leaves. She is also wearing a short white and gold cape, with an upstanding collar and lined with silver. Her sleeves are trimmed with garlands of green leaves and end with white, elbow length gloves. She is also wearing a silver hat, decorated with braid and worn tilted on the left side of her head. Harry Beard Collection.
Only 1000 copies of the original, limited edition, book were published by Benn Brothers.
The Diaghilev production of this ballet was stage at the Alhambra Theatre in 1921.
