Place of origin

Taken from a set of illustrations from the designs of Leon Bakst for The Sleeping Princess which were originally published by Ben Brothers in 1923, this illustration is labelled 'Planche XIV: 'La Princesse Aurore'. It shows the princess wearing a dress consisted of several tiers of fabric with a, long, elaborate, white cloak, decorated with silver fringe and motifs at the edges, and with green leaf, motifs across the surface. The most striking feature of her dress is the bodice and 'upper skirt' which is decorated with an image of the sun, its rays spreading out across the surface. Beneath this layer are two swathes of her underskirt which, like her cloak, is decorated with silver motifs and garlands of green leaves. She wears long, elbow length gloves and white circlets at her wrists and elbows. She also is also wearing a delicate gold crown trimmed with two small, white feathers. Harry Beard Collection.

Only 1000 copies of the original, limited edition, book were published by Benn Brothers.

Further information about Bakst and his work for the Ballets Russes can be found on the Theatre and Performance Section of the museum's website.
