Taken from a set of illustrations from the designs of Leon Bakst for The Sleeping Princess which were originally published by Ben Brothers in 1923, this illustration is labelled 'Planche XIII: 'Décor du Jardin Royal'. It shows a garden on several levels, filled with dark green trees and topiary. At the centre is a white semi-circular structure, with pairs of columns at it's base. A group of figures, two of which are dressed in royal robes, are walking through this structure. An elaborately decorated white building, possibly the palace, is visible in the distance. Harry Beard Collection.
Only 1000 copies of the original, limited edition, book were published by Benn Brothers.
The Diaghilev production of this ballet was stage at the Alhambra Theatre in 1921.
Further information about Bakst and his work for the Ballets Russes can be found on the Theatre and Performance Section of the museum's website.
