Place of origin |
Taken from a set of illustrations from the designs of Leon Bakst for The Sleeping Princess which were originally published by Ben Brothers in 1923, this illustration is labelled 'Planche VII: Décor du Baptême'. It shows the proposed decoration for a scene in the ballet, presumably the interior of the palace during the Baptism scene. The lavish interior is decorated in white and gold and dominated by marble pillars. A blue velvet canopy, trimmed with ermine is just visible on the right hand side of the image and there is a classical style sculpture in the centre of the scene. Harry Beard Collection.
Only 1000 copies of the original, limited edition, book were published by Benn Brothers.
Diaghilev's production of this ballet was staged at the Alhambra Theatre in 1921.
Further information about Bakst and his work for the Ballets Russes can be found on the Theatre and Performance Section of the museum's website.
