During the first quarter of the eighteenth century, allegorical scenes of gallant encounters became very popular with French painters and engravers as they reflected the free spirit of the age. This scene may have been taken from a French print engraved by Nataniel Parr after a drawing by Nicholas Lancret entitled "La Terre" , and published by Thomas and John Bowles in London in 1752. It was part of a series entitled "The Elements", and including "Air", "Earth", "Fire" and "Water".
