Gallery label
European Ornament Gallery, V&A VAUXHALL CAR WHEEL TRIM English, 1991 Plastic and steel. Designed for the Astra MK 2 launched in 1984, and later fitted to the Belmont GL. The badge in the centre shows a griffin, taken from the coat of arms of the company, which was originally that of its parent, the Vauxhall Iron Works. Fuel-saving aerodynamic design means that there are very few ways to add ornament to the modern car. Wheel trims are useful in reducing drag, dirt and road noise, but their chief purpose is to add a distinctive decorative touch to a plain body, at the same time as showing off the manufacturer's name. Shown here is a range of solutions to decorating a disc with simple yet striking ornamental devices. (Given by Vauxhall Motor Limited)(1991)
