Place of origin |
Frances Trevelyan Buckland, born in 1926, was a surgeon, zoologist, author and natural historian who gave up medicine for a career in natural history. He died on 19th December 1880, less than a month before this image of him as 'The Late Mr. Frank Buckland' was pulished in an illustrated periodical.
He is shown here, in an engraving reproduced from an original photograph, with his pet capuchin monkeys Jackie and Jenny. Buckland's home at 37 Albany Street, London, was as notorious for its menagerie and it was for the varied menus of unusual dishes he got his cook to prepare.
