Quilted Petticoat

1740-1760 (made), 1870-1910 (altered)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Woman's petticoat of ivory-coloured silk satin lined with glazed undyed wool and wadded with wool. It is quilted in running stitch with white silk thread in a pattern of undulating leafy vines with sunflowers and pomegranates, arranged horizontally in 3 tiers, with a background of diagonal parallel lines. The petticoat is made of 8 panels of silk, with pocket openings in the side seams. The hem is a quilted horizontal band, thickly padded with blue wool. It is faced with a deep border of unbleached linen.

The petticoat was altered in the late 19th century, probably for a studio prop. The original waist binding and ties were removed, the waist gathered and secured with linen tape and hooks and eyes.
