Sarah Siddons (1755-1831) played Mrs. Haller in The Stranger by August von Kotzebue (1761-1819), with her brother John Philip Kemble (1757-1823) in the title role at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in 1798. The original painting by Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) after which this etching was drawn, is in the collection of the Tate Gallery (N000785), bequeathed in 1868 by Mrs. Siddons' youngest daughter, Cecilia Combe. An engraving by James Thomson after the painting was published by Simpkin & Marshall in 1820, and another by Charles Turner was published by Henry Colburn in 1826.
