John Waddington is one of the most famous names in British games manufacturing. Founded in the nineteenth century his company started life as a small printing firm. Waddingtons is best known for its playing cards and for the distribution of Monopoly and Cluedo in Britain. The company also produced jigsaw puzzles, circular examples of which were particularly popular during the 1970s and 1980s. The subject matter of this puzzle is interesting and educational and echoes that of earlier puzzles and games of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Object history | It was noted on 01/02/1988 that the puzzle was missing two pieces, and again on 28/10/1996, 17/04/1998 and 10/06/2006. The first person to note this was a John E Ingham, the chairman of Inghams Caravans Ltd., Ribby Hall Leisure Park, Wrea Green, Kirkham, Preston, Lancashire. |
