Ink pots such as this were often attached to a pencase forming a set. Used in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal they reflect the religion and mythology of the culture that gave rise to them. The form of the ink pot itself is almost identical to the purna kalasha or vase used to contain sacred water while vegetation and crocodile like makara or mythological monsters refer to the life giving powers of water.

Cast brass ink pot, Nepal, 19th century
Physical description
A cast brass ink pot of flattened globular form decorated on one side with an sight armed Ganesha and on the other with a four armed Vishnu riding on Garuda. Two crocodiles support rings at either side which hold brass chains for hannging . A central brass chain secures the lid, all three chains attach to one large ring.
