At least fifteen other similar studies by Tintoretto and his achool are in other collections. Tintoretto is known to have drawn regularly from sculpture, and his studio was stocked with models and casts. This study may have been made from a cast of Michelangelo’s group or from one of the small bronze or terracotta versions illustrated, for example, in John Pope-Hennessy, Samson and a Philistine by Giovanni Bologna (Victoria and Albert Museum Monograph), 1954, p. 9, fig. 8)
