This romantic depiction of Mount Paektu, a sacred mountain on the border of North Korea and China, shows the sun emerging behind the dark hillside. In the middle ground, the Heavenly Lake, a body of water that occupies the volcanic crater in the centre of Mount Paektu, is depicted. An atmosphere of stillness and reverence pervades the work, which includes no living creatures. Its circular composition draws the viewer's gaze across the lake waters towards the glow of the emerging sun.
