The painting, oil on canvas, depicts two soldiers, both wearing medals, looking together at sheet music on a table. The younger soldier, whose winter hat lies on the table beside him, holds a guitar. The second, older man wears a cap and holds a flute in one hand and music in the other. The guitarist, at the centre of the composition, is lit from above. Behind the two men, musical instrumetns are arranged on a shelf. The setting is a log cabin. A pot plant is on a shelf to the upper left of the composition.
