Harlem

Print
ca. 1960 (printed), ca. 1960 (designed)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Edward Bawden described the school of Topolski as 'the sound tradition of English draughtsmanship and illustration which harks back to Rowlandson and Bunbury'. The artist is probably best-known for his contribution to British Second-World-War art, his portraits of prominent sitters, and the public murals he executed in the 1970s. This print dates from around 1960 when the artist was travelling and working in the States. It depicts an urban scene of a busy Harlem sidewalk, and is an excellent example of Topolski's later graphic style, in which the medium of etching was employed to lend his work even greater energy and vibrancy.
