Trainer

2004 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

These trainers were featured within an outfit, consisting of a Walé Adeyemi bikini top, Alexander McQueen denim jeans, an All Saints bomber jacket, and a Silja Mannien string vest in the 'Black British Style' exhibition at the V&A in 2004.

Trainers as an item of fashion footwear were revived through their association with hip-hop. While trainers, like this pair by Adidas, were worn throughout the 1970s, the last decades of the 20th century saw a massive explosion in trainers' popularity. Such devotion has resulted in some trainer brands and styles becoming a prized possession and highly collectable.

Local to Global (Object No. 18)
Today the shoe industry is entirely globalised. This has meant great changes in the production, commerce and consumption of shoes. The makers of trainers have led the way. In 1986, China produced just 8 per cent of the world’s footwear. Today it is estimated that six out of ten pairs of shoes in the world are made there.
