Place of origin

Tootal Fabrics is a British textile manufacturer based in Manchester. This brochure and sample book date from 1958. At this time, a fabric designer's first steps would be to sketch out a weave plan on graph paper and choose colours from a chart provided by yarn makers. A skilled painter then copied the design onto a piece of cardboard before the painted sample was sent by courier to the mill. Once the company had received a quote on fabric cost, Tootal would then show the sample to buyers from Britain's major department stores. For this sample book, the colours were chosen by the Italian fashion designer Emilio Pucci.
