This petticoat is made of white nylon. Its layers of stiffened ruffles give it the shape needed to support the full skirted silhouette of 1950s fashion. Although nylon was produced much earlier, it did not become widely used in womens' undergarments until the late 1940s and early 1950s. This is an instructive example of the advancements made in nylon underwear in terms of both shape and comfort.

| Object history | This petticoat was worn by the donor, Vivian Albany Ward (nee Williams) for her wedding to Mr Ward in Wood Green, Middlesex, on 3 August 1957. She had previously donated her wedding dress, veil, and pink nylon lace corset by Berlei to the Museum in 1991. |
