Bathing Costume
1947 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
The owner purchased this two-piece bathing costume in 1947. The pale polka dot print is typical of the muted colour palette available in post-war Britain since dye shortages and clothing restrictions were not fully lifted until 1950. Though synthetic fabrics would eventually become widely used for underwear and swimwear, this early example incorporates thin elastic and large amounts of ruching to achieve fit and support. It's thin, single-layer construction allows the wearer greater comfort in both wet and dry conditions.
