Place of origin

The offices of the Kölnische Zeitung newspaper were designed by architect Wilhelm Riphahn in the 1920s in a high Modernist style. The photographer Werner Mantz was particularly associated with this type of architecture, taking sympathetic photographs of many Modernist buildings. This is one of his best known images, showing the form of the building through its distinctive lighting, which makes the building appear like a flat, abstract geometrical pattern as much as a solid building.
