Place of origin

Works by Laura Owens (born USA 1970) are characterised by a self-consciously naïve style; they fluctuate between figuration and abstraction, often combining elements of colour-field painting, and abstract gestural marks, with delicately drawn trees, flowers, birds and animals. Her influences include European, Asian and American landscape painting, as well as the decorative arts. She often imitates the appearance of textiles such as appliqué and embroidery, paisley patterns, and motifs from kimonos and other Japanese textiles.

Her paintings, drawings and prints often incorporate collage, or the illusion of collage. In this print three patterned pieces have been pasted on to represent flowers. Each print in this edition is subtly different, using different patterns in various combinations for the collaged petals. There is a further level of illusion in play here - the collaged pieces look like fabric samples, but in fact they are papers printed to look like fabrics.
