Brief description | Child's silver cutlery set in presentation case, made in England by Martin, Hall & Co of Sheffield, 1887 |
Credit line | Given by Miss Irene Warne |
Object history | Given by Miss Irene Warne (RF 92/142). Said by the donor to have been a Christening present to her mother, née Ethel Augusta Dumayne in 1880 (birth registered Wandsworth 3rd quarter 1880, probably born 07/07/1880). Ethel Augusta Dumayne was the eldest of at least five children, the others being Clarice (born ca. 1883), Henry (born ca 1886), Dorothy (born ca 1888) and Norah (born ca 1890). Their parents were Henry Langford Dumayne, a dentist, and his wife (née Eliza Cranswick Cooper). The two different types of mark on the set establish the date of manufacture so firmly that either Ethel Augusta was christened at seven years of age, which is quite possible, or the set was given to her at a later date, perhaps by a godparent. |
