Place of origin |
This dish is an example of Cizhou ware, a type of ceramic made in the northern part of China during the Song dynasty (960-1279). Although Cizhou wares were made in a number of kilns in different regions, they are linked by shared design characteristics.
This plate is a good example of the ware. Its stoneware body is decorated with a white slip (a diluted white clay which gives a consistent ground colour) over the surface, and the floral design carved through this slip to form a contrasting curvilinear design.
