Amphora, storage jar or vase. On one side are represented Hercules, Athena and Lolaus, on the other side is a four horsed chariot with a warrior and charioteer, to the left is a framed figure. The neck is decorated with palmettes and conventional lotus flowers. Round the shoulder is a band of tongue pattern and below the figures are bands of fret ornament, lotus buds and rays pointing upwards from the foot. Under each handle is a symmetrical device of palmettes and lotus buds.

Object history | The strip below the figures is the simplest kind of Greek Key - it can turn into a complicated interlace pattern. On the neck of the vase is an early type of lotus and palmette pattern (case 19), the origin of egg and dart. The Greek key is also known as fret, and meander. The scene shows Athena between Herakles (Hercules) and Iolaos. Found at Valia in Tuscanny 4796-1901 Made in Athens. Found in an Etruscan tomb at Vulci in Italy. |
