Printed wallpaper borders were commonly used in the 18th and 19th centuries to cover the heads of tacks used to hang the wallpaper, to cover joins and to give a neat finish to the wall. This 'egg and dart' border (the name describes the ornamental motifs in the design) has been printed in shades of grey to imitate moulded plasterwork.
