Clear glass

set with millefiori

4479 & a-1901

This vase and stopper shows the influence of Salviati &Co.'s association with the English archaeologist, Sir Henry Layard, and the Italian collectors, Augusto and Allessandro Castellani. The use of millefiori technique was the result of studies in 1872 of Roman glass fragments from the Murano museum of glass: it is combined here with latticino work in the style of around 1500 and with a Renaissance shape. The jury of the 1878 Paris Exhibition noted that some of Salviati's glass was not intended for use, due to its fragility.
