Place of origin

This is a plaster cast of Ionic capitals and entablature, one of four plaster casts made by the British Museum casting department using ex-V&A moulds dating from the early 1900s in the Doric, Ionic, Corinthian and Composite style. They were made in 1991 for display in the Ornament Gallery of the Museum.

This type of capital with its straight moulding between the volutes, appeared towards the end of the Greek development and was taken up by the Romans and Renaissance architects. This entablature has dentils, which originated in Asia Minor, and a frieze. This type of Ionic is based on that published by Vignola in 1562.
