Object history | Purchased from Mary Ann Pinto and displayed for the first time in the 'Spirit of Christmas' exhibition at the Museum of Childhood (1 December 1985-12 January 1986). Prior to its acquisition by the musuem, the seller provided the following description of the piece: ‘The presepio was assembled over a period of seven years by Emma Pinto Cammarata, an artist, who was able to restore, repair clothing and redress, when necessary, the old figures which were not in good condition when purchased. Many of the old figures were purchased from antiques dealers in the Naples area. A Neapolitan artisan who specialises in buildings for presepios made the structures and brought them to Florence; he worked on reassembling the presepio, building floors and background and giving advice for several days. The presepio contains a grotto, the magi and attendants, an osteria (restaurant), market, another house, shepherds, angels, and background.’ The grotto contains a crib, steps leading to the crib and classical Roman columns. The Roman columns, some broken, appear in the Neapolitan creche to signify the destruction of the Roman pagan religion with the birth of Christ. The figures of the Virgin Mary and St. Joseph are 18th century, of good quality and have glass eyes. Baby Jesus is an 18th or 19th century piece of good quality. The papier-mâché cow is 19th century, and the terracotta donkey is a modern piece. The magi and attendants include eight 18th and 19th century figures with glass eyes, two 18th and 19th century figures with painted eyes, two camels and one elephant. The osteria, one of the two-storey large houses, is furnished, and has an outdoor oven and baker beside it, a tarantella dancer and musician in front of it, as well as a table with two customers eating. There are many accessories such as food, cooking utensils, etc. There are three 18th or 19th century figures with glass eyes and six with painted eyes in this group. Beside the second large house is the market area with a stand, scale baskets of vegetables, a chestnut vendor and chestnut roaster. The house as a “courting couple”, one with glass eyes, one with painted eyes. Beside the house on the road is a large cart loaded with wine casks and pulled by two white oxen; the driver has glass eyes. In the countryside there are three shepherds with their sheep, one with glass eyes, two with musical instruments; a boy is carrying water up the hill to the background where the sheep begin to diminish in size. Background – the small figures and structures in the background are necessary to give the impression of depth. With structures and figures of diminishing size, the Neapolitan creche creates the illusion of a vast distance in a relatively small area. There are two “medium-sized” houses behind the largest structures and behind them 30 small structures with tiny ceramic figures and some small animals. Sky – blue silk-rayon with ten 18th and 19th century angels.’ |
Production | The parts come from various places in Italy and were assembled into this set in Florence. The buildings specifically were made in Naples. |
