Plain circular bone chine plate 22.8cm (9") diameter, industrially formed ('jiggered' and 'jolleyed'). The upper suface with a green shiny glaze which has been overlaid with darker matt green glaze (the brighter green is visible only at the edges). The centre is transfer-printed in two tones of gold with a roundel depicting two pairs of lovers wearing Watteauesque dress in a landscape with buildings, and the border is printed in the same technique with a band with a repeating pattern of scrollwork. The base is printed in pale green enamel 'BY ROYAL LETTERS PATENT / CHARLES BARLOW / HEATHFIELD WORKS / HANLEY STAFF' beneath royal arms.

Object history | Godden notes in his Encyclopaedia of British Porcelain Manufacturers (1988, p.122) that Charles Barlow took out a patent for a new form of bright and matt gold enrichments in October 1882 and that he then set himself up as a decorator of earthenware and bone china blanks purchased from various manufacturers. |
