Entwurf einer historischen Architektur

Print
1721 (published)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

These vases are taken from the book Entwurf einer historischen Architektur, by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, published in 1721. Fischer von Erlach was an important figure in Austrian architecture. He designed many of the Baroque masterpieces built in Vienna. In this print, the two vases are presented in a particular visual context. While the pyramid, palm trees and obelisks in the background suggest that the vases are genuine Egyptian relics, they were actually designed by Fischer von Erlach himself. The vases are in the auricular style, which is inspired by the shape of the ear.

Object history
From Fischer von Erlach's comparative history of architecture, published in Vienna in 1721. Note the pyramid and obelisks in the background. Although the two vases are presented as genuine Egyptian antiquities, they are in fact fanciful concoctions in the auricular style (see case 26) by the artist himself.
