This slip is stylish but it reflects the strict rationing during the Second World War that included underwear. In 1941 the Board of Trade introduced the Utility scheme which dictated the amount of material, decoration and labour allowed for all types of clothing. As a result this slip was made of rayon rather than silk and had minimal trimmings to save on costs and fabric.
