The execution of Charles I was commemorated in many medals, both contemporary and later. Jan Roettiers (1631-1703) was Chief Engraver at the Royal Mint. He was a member of a whole dynasty of medallists, beginning with his father Philip, who was born in 1596, and ending with the death of Alexandre Louis Roettiers de Montaleau in 1855. The legend in Latin, reads: ‘Charles, by the grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland and of glorious memory’.
