Given to the designer, Michael Annals, by the theatre producer, Theodore Mann, as a first night present to mark the opening of Peter Shaffer's play, The Royal Hunt of the Sun, at the ANTA Theatre, New York.
The Royal Hunt of the Sun was premiered in London by the National Theatre Company. It was the first new play to be presented by the company, opening to great acclaim at the Old Vic in 1964, directed by John Dexter and designed by Michael Annals. In 1965 Dexter re-staged the play for the ANTA Theatre, New York, using the same production team.
