Costume for a Male Guest in Balanchine's ballet Le Bal, designed by Giorgio de Chirico, Diaghilev Ballet, 1929, consisting of:
Frock coat, the front and front sleeves of grey gaberdine, the back and back sleeves of white flannel with stiffened terracotta epaulettes and appliqued 'medals'. The white cloth collar and cuffs are outlined and painted in black and the simulated white silk cummerbund is painted with black fish-scales. Across the chest is a terracotta silk sash with a wool fringe. On the back is a grenade with three lightning flashes in yellow silk highlighted terracotta and black.
Trousers in white flannel with a stripe divided into alternate salmon pink and blue elongated triangles.
