Costume after a design by Nicholas Roerich for a Maiden in Massine's ballet Le Sacre du printemps in the production for Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, 1920. Long robe of off white flannelette coloured pink orange with 'underskirt' and orange underarm gusset, with elaborate multicoloured patterns around neck, shoulders and cuffs. On the chest are five noduled circles with a pomme cross on a magenta ground. Around the hem is an elaborate multicoloured patterned band, with a simple pattern of lines and spots on the 'underskirt'. All colours appear 'washed out'. There are two small customs stamps on the back

Costume after a design by Nicholas Roerich for a Maiden in Massine's ballet Le Sacre du printemps in the production for Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, 1920. Long robe of off white flannelette coloured pink orange with 'underskirt' and orange underarm gusset, with elaborate multicoloured patterns around neck, shoulders and cuffs. Object history
Nicholas Roerich designed both Nijinsky's original production of Le Sacre du printemps in 1913 and Massine's new production of 1920. It appears that the Maidens in Massine's ballet wore belts first designed for the Women in the 1913 staging.
