Four-part costume designed by Leon Bakst for a Pirate/Brigand in Fokine's ballet Daphnis and Chloe, created for Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, 1912.
Olive black tunic with white circular collar and skirt band painted with blue and chestnut checks and sleeve bands with ginger lines. At the hem a row of white cloth circles is stencilled in chestnut and appliqued, leaving a 'wheel' design in the basic fabric.
Black serge breeches with broad bands of cream-coloured cotton at hem stencilled with dull scarlet bands. The is a half belt at the back of the breeches and fastens with buttons at the sides.
Belt of blue and chestnut checks to match collar of tunic
Large, irregularly-shaped poncho of black flannel with an appliqued border of cream-coloured flannel with arches of dull red infilled with blue. The body of the poncho has a repeat pattern of stylised appliqued horns in cream-coloured cotton outlined in dull red. What appears to be the back is more heavily decorated. The neck opening is off centre
