Kaleidoscopic Colour-Top with box and literature. A scientific toy, illustrating phenomena of colour, comprising a spinning-top consisting of a wooden disc with detachable spindles, screw-on bases and a handle; 24 black discs with perforated patterns and strings attached (some strings missing); two sets, each of six discs, coloured white, black, green, yellow, red and blue; 10 pieces in white, cream and yellow, green, blue and red (two tones of each); two sets, each six heart-shaped pieces, coloured white, black, green, yellow, red and blue; four particoloured discs; four black discs with parts of the centres removed; one orange and one purple disc with the centres removed; one black disc with large circular perforations; six patterned discs in various colours. Also a double sheet of instructions and descriptive text. In a maple-wood box with rosewood inlay, with a hinged lid.

Production
R. & J. Beck was founded in 1847 as Smith & Beck by James Smith in partnership with his former apprentice, Richard Beck. Richard's brother, Joseph, later joined the company and from 1857 it was known as Smith, Beck & Beck. James Smith retired in 1865, after which it was known as R. & J. Beck.
