19th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This masala or spice box would have held spices such as turmeric, red chilli, cumin powder, cloves, cinnamon bark and mustard seeds. This example dates from the period 1800-1900 and has seven compartments, each with its own individual cover.

Although this box is made of terracotta, spice boxes can be made in wood as well as a variety of different metals. Today, with the arrival of mass production, most Indian households use simple stainless-steel spice boxes.
