Pointe shoes for ballet are hand-made with the ‘block’ created from hessian, cardboard and glue. Dancers traditionally darned their own shoes to improve the support and comfort and enable the shoes to last longer. Genée wore shoes made by Ebermann of Berlin until 1914.
